Disability Inclusive Community Development

Pilot/implement inclusive development projects through local partners in early identification, intervention, rehabilitation, inclusive education, health, and livelihoods.
We shall do this by:

  • Supporting partner organizations to implement projects in early interventions, inclusive education, and livelihoods.
  • Contribute towards the establishment of a community of practice for knowledge sharing, research, advocacy, and generation of evidence for service providers in inclusive education, early interventions, and livelihoods for persons with disabilities.

Wezesha Elimu Project

The Wezesha Elimu project ‘Securing education for children with disabilities’ aimed to address barriers that limit children with disabilities from access, retention, and transition in education. Through the previous phases this has been achieved through performance of corrective surgeries, adaptation of school environments, early identification, and placement of children in schools.

The project had two main objectives.

  • To provide specialist medical services through mobile clinics targeting children with disabilities with no access to treatment and surgical interventions.
  • To strengthen early identification assessment, intervention and appropriate placement, retention, and transition of learners with disabilities in as per the 2018 Sector Policy for learners and trainees with disabilities.

These objectives were achieved through.

  • Surgical interventions
  • Post-operative review, habilitation, and rehabilitation.
  • Mobile clinics
  • Early interventions and appropriate school placement.

From 2016-2020 the project was funded by Safaricom Foundation and Co funded by CBM International, CBM Kenya and Cure Kenya. In 2021-2024 the project was funded by Mpesa Foundation. The project has been implemented in the following counties Uasin Gichu, Kericho, Embu, Nyeri, Kisii, Kisumu, Trans Nzoia, Machakos, Nakuru, Taita Taveta, Kiambu, Baringo, Mombasa, West Pokot.
